Two people were wounded, including a 4-year-old boy, in a shooting Thursday afternoon in Woodlawn on the South Side.

They were traveling about 1:50 p.m. in a silver Hyundai in the 1500 block of East 65th Street when someone opened fire from another vehicle, according to a Chicago police spokesperson.

Responding officers took the boy to Comer Children’s Hospital in their squad car, where he was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds to his groin area, police said.

A man, 22, was struck in his chest and transported in serious condition to University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.

Activist Andrew Holmes told the Sun-Times the boy was stable and in surgery.

“The mother right now, we understand, she’s devastated. She’s still in the hospital with the detectives talking to them,” Holmes said.

“Mostly she’s just concerned over the health of her child,” Holmes said. “Hopefully, that child can get up and run and bounce back.”

Holmes said he didn’t know whether the wounded man was related to the child.

The court system is wrongly allowing criminals to be released from custody after firing weapons, he said.

“I’m encouraging the state’s attorney, when the perpetrators get arrested, stop plea bargaining with them. Because look at the babies that have been shot. It’s disturbing that children cannot grow up without getting shot. Children cannot live in fear,” he said.
