A firefighter was seriously injured Sunday afternoon in the Austin neighborhood.

The firefighter was taken to West Suburban Medical Center after being injured in the 1200 block of North Lavergne Avenue around 4:30 p.m. according to fire officials.

The injured firefighter had been in the basement of the building when he “went down,” and a mayday was called, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the fire department. The firefighter was listed in serious condition at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was transferred.

Another firefighter suffered a less serious injury to his arm, Merritt said.

No other information was immediately available.
