The Chicago police say an 8-year-old boy who died in a shooting accident Tuesday on the West Side had found an unsecured gun under a mattress inside his home in Garfield Park.

Jacari Brown died after the gun was accidentally discharged early Tuesday inside a home in the 3100 block of West Flournoy Street, according to the police.

Jacari was with a cousin, looking for a TV remote, when they found the gun, according to police.

His cousin tried to take the gun away from Jacari, and that’s when it discharged, striking the boy in the chest, police said. He was prounounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The police haven’t determined who owned the gun.
